Matava is for those of you that want to get away from the large, expensive resorts yet still sample some of the best diving in Fiji around. Located on the island of Kadavu, a stone's throw from The Great Astrolabe Reef, Matava is The Astrolabe Hideaway. The Great Astrolabe Reef is one of the most under-hyped dive destinations - pristine hard corals, plenty of fish dramatic walls patrolled by large pelagics.
Rooms: 10
Diving in: Kadavu south
Dive type: Boat and beach dives
Divers: Max. 20 |
 |
The dive resort is a genuine eco-hideaway - reef conservation and awareness programmes, recycling and organic farming are all a priority. Many are surprised by the simplicity of the Matava Resort (you make your way back to your room by lantern light) and even more surprised by how much they fall in love with the place, regardless of the absence of modern conveniences.
Matava is not a deluxe resort but is a simple, piece of paradise run by a friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable team, and so exclusive that there is no road access. Guests are treated to the real Fiji both above land and underwater.

There are ten traditional thatched bures. Nine bures (Fijian-style bungalows) are en-suite and one has shared bathroom facilities. En-suite bures are Honeymoon, Oceanview Superior (larger), Private Chalet House (has the best views of all bures - you can request this one for the same price as an Oceanview Superior Bure) and Oceanview Standard (smaller).
The bures are constructed traditionally from local materials. Polished floorboards, solar powered lighting and personal sun decks have been added to ensure your comfort.
All the bures at Matava Resort have:
- Private bathroom with hot water shower and towels for all en-suite rooms
- Seaview balcony or beachfront
- Simple furnishings
- Mosquito nets

The Great Astrolabe reef is the world's third largest barrier reef and is Fiji's largest living organism. It extends along the entire southern side of Kadavu and stretches for over 100km. With one instructor and three divemasters, there is plenty of attention even if all guests are diving.
Matava has an eight metre speedboat with steel ladders, taking up to 12 divers on dive trips to this spectacular and colourful hard coral reef. Two tank dive trips depart at 08:30 hrs from the resort's water front. Hot water showers and rinse tanks are available on return at the resort.
Dive trips include a qualified divemaster, drinking water, tanks, weights and weightbelts.
